Biographies
Thomas Jöstlein has served as associate Principal Horn of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) since 2010, and is thrilled for this project, his first solo recording with his wife, Tricia, and pianist Yeon- kyung Kim.
He enjoys a varied career of solo work, chamber music, orchestral playing, composing and teaching.
He was the New York Philharmonic assistant Principal Horn under Lorin Maazel, playing three major tours, including the historic live broadcast from North Korea (2008).
As a soloist, Jöstlein won first prize in the professional division of the American Horn Competition (2003), and the grand prize at the Hugo Kauder Music Competition at Yale University (2005), earning a recital at Merkin Concert Hall in NYC.
He has appeared with the SLSO as a soloist on several occasions, playing Strauss First Concerto (2022), Schumann’s Concertstück for Four Horns and Orchestra and the Vivaldi and Telemann Double Concerti under Nicholas McGegan.
In 2019, Thomas toured China, Taiwan, and Japan with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and pianist Nobu Tsujii, recording the Ravel G-Major and Beethoven second concerti. He has also held positions with the Honolulu, Omaha, Richmond, and Kansas City Symphony Orchestras, and performed in the Classical Tahoe, Napa Valley, Brevard, Britt, and Eastern Music Festivals.
Jöstlein loves spreading the lessons of his mentors: Arnold Jacobs, Roger Rocco, and Interlochen Music Camp teachers Douglas Campbell and Randall Faust. He was assistant Professor of Horn at the University of Illinois, guest lecturer at Indiana University, and at Saint Louis University, the University of Hawaii and Virginia Commonwealth University.
He appears on several recordings, notably Tony Bennett’s Duets II album, along with his sister, Barbara Jöstlein Currie, Fourth Horn of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
On the natural (classical) horn, he has performed the Haydn D-Major concerto and the Brahms Trio with Stephanie Chase and Brian Connelly, and with the Boulder Bach Festival. And, as an alphorn soloist, he has performed with the Richmond, Jacksonville (IL) and Britt festival orchestras, among others, and has commissioned a work by Randall Faust for Tricia and him.
Jöstlein performs on a triple horn by J. Patterson, on natural horns by R. Seraphinoff and L.J. Raoux (ca. 1820), and on a Vanon alphorn.
His music is published by Köbl Edition (Munich), Faust Music, Cimmaron Music Press, and Cherry Classics (notably his horn duet transcriptions of two Brahms symphonies)
He lives in University City, MO, with Tricia, sons, Klaus and Max, and our mutt, Alma.
Tricia Jöstlein lives a full and varied musical life in St. Louis with her husband, Thomas, and their sons Klaus (violin) and Max (cello). Before moving to St. Louis, she held the position of Principal Horn with the Omaha Symphony and Des Moines Metro Opera. She has also held positions with the Richmond Symphony, Honolulu Symphony, and the Britt Festival Orchestra.
Ms. Jöstlein frequently performs as an extra musician with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and serves as Adjunct Professor of Horn at Webster University. She also performs with Chamber Project St. Louis, St. Louis Chamber Music Society, The Heartland Festival Orchestra, and St. Louis Winter Opera.
Ms. Jöstlein is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Her teachers include Bryan Kennedy, Roger Rocco, and Randall Faust.
Yeon-kyung Kim is a member of the Collaborative Piano Staff for the Western Illinois University School of Music where she is regular collaborator with Guest Artists, Faculty Members, and Students on Recital and Festival Performances Dr. Kim is from South Korea and holds the degree Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). Her teachers include James Tocco at CCM, Emile Naoumoff at Indiana University, who was the last student of Nadia Boulanger, Christopher Harding at the University of Michigan, and Aviram Reichert at Seoul National University.
Yeon-Kyung regularly performs as a solo pianist and a chamber musician. She performed at multiple venues at CCM, in Northern and Southern Indiana, Detroit Metropolitan area including Ann Arbor, and in Seoul, South Korea. During her study in Michigan, she featured at Max M. Fisher Hall in Detroit for the Beethoven Sonata Marathon of Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She also presented at masterclasses for John O’Conor, André Watts, Peter Takács, Norman Krieger, Sphinx Quartet, Warren Jones, and Jonathan Feldman. She is an avid chamber musician, and was a 1st prize winner in Chamber music at Seoul Art Concours, where she played as a member of Quartet Y.
Dr. Kim is an experienced teacher in has taught in on the faculty of the CCM Secondary Piano Department-and has presented outreach concerts for the Michigan Performance Outreach Workshop, as well as in Ohio for her own non-profit organization, Glow Music.
James Land is the Assistant Professor of Tuba at Western Illinois University (WIU). Prior to his appointment to WIU, Dr. Land was the Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. Dr. Land received both a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music degree in Tuba Performance from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, a Performance Diploma from Indiana University where he was also the Associate Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Memphis.
He is an active performer throughout the Midwest and East Coast and has performed with many ensembles; including the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the Dayton (OH) Philharmonic, and the Saint Louis Low Brass Collective, among others. Additionally, Dr. Land has performed as a soloist with numerous ensembles, to include the Western Illinois University Wind Ensemble, the University of Memphis Wind Ensemble, the University of Georgia Wind Ensemble, the Saint Louis Low Brass Collective, and has presented recitals and masterclasses at many colleges and universities. Dr. Land serves on the faculty of the WIU Summer Music Institute, and has also served both as a Brass Teaching Assistant and on faculty at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan.
Dr. Land's primary duties at WIU include teaching private lessons and studio classes, performing with the La Moine Brass Quintet, teaching recording techniques, and serves as the recording engineer for School of Music performances.
Angel Perez holds the Bachelor of Music Degree from Western Illinois University. He has served as a Video Director, Livestream Engineer, and Audio Engineer for the WIU School of Music Concerts. In addition, he has been a Music Librarian for the NPR Station at Western Illinois University: Tri-States Public Radio. Currently, he works for Hal Leonard Music Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
