This Berceuse is from a collection of character pieces composed by Amy Beach in 1898: Three Compositions: “La Captive,” “Berceuse,” and “Mazurka.” The Berceuse is a short lullaby in ternary ABA form. This version of the work does not remain at pitch but instead has been lowered by two octaves to allow it to fit comfortably on the horn. Some of the markings have also been adjusted to make sense on horn compared to the original. The Berceuse is part of a series of arrangements meant for a wide group of hornists-from developing players looking for a work for a festival performance -to the professional hornist searching for a lyrical character piece for a recital. This set also includes works by Cui, Grieg, and Humperdinck. Beach's Berceuse is the most difficult of this set of arrangements. These arrangements are of moderate technical difficulty, and are meant to test numerous aspects of horn playing outside of high playing. The Berceuse includes the study of ornamentation, middle register endurance, and the study of the sharp key-D major concert. Grade: 3-4 Learn More -

Fleeting images of a Middle Eastern bazaar appear in muted colors that fade in and out. The morning begins slowly, as merchants get ready for the day ahead. Somewhere in the distance the bazaar begins and the marketplace builds in activity and excitement. The market activity peaks and gradually subsides, and the aftermath gives way to the evening. The dreamer is finally transported away from the Casbah with memories of the day's excitement trailing behind. -Jeffrey Snedeker, November 2016

$19.95Vitaly Buyanovsky's Espana is one of the most frequently performed works for unaccompanied horn, a brilliant display of exuberance and lyricism inspired by Spanish Folk tradition. In this arrangement, I attempted to reinforce some of these qualities by creating an accompaniment for guitar and double bass, in what may be the first instance of such instrumentation. Both the guitar and the double bass are being employed not only to provide a harmonic background, but also to reflect the rhythmic vitality of the flamenco dancing and to evoke the sound of castanets. -Kazimierz Machala Grade: 5 Learn More
