These songs of Cui are part of a series of arrangements for a wide group of hornists-from developing players looking for a work for a festival performance-to the professional hornist searching for a lyrical character piece for a recital. This set includes works by Beach, Cui, and Humperdinck. These arrangements are of moderate technical difficulty, and the songs by Cui are meant to be the second in progressive difficulty of this series. For the novice horn player, these Songs provide the opportunity to expand both the pitch and expressive range, as well as to develop the hornist’s ability to coordinate with the pianist. Learn More -

The songs of Grieg are part of a series of arrangements for a wide group of hornists-from developing players looking for a work for a festival performance-to the professional hornist searching for a lyrical character piece for a recital. This set also includes works by Beach, Cui, and Humperdinck. These arrangements are of moderate technical difficulty and are meant to test numerous aspects of horn playing outside of high playing. These songs by Grieg are the simplest in difficulty of this set of arrangements. Grieg's Children's songs were picked to teach a student how to approach playing with a pianist. Not only is the horn melody always doubled in the piano, but the arrangements are also meant to be simple collaborations. The range of each piece keeps to a middle-low register so that any student, almost regardless of time put into the instrument, could begin working on one of the movements. The keys are simple, whether in sharp or flat keys. Grade: 2-3 Learn More -

A wonderful collection of fifteen Holiday Songs arranged for two horns by Randall E. Faust. Playing Horn Duets has provided some of the most enjoyable moments for me in Horn lessons-both as a student and as a teacher. A couple of years ago, during the Covid-pandemic lockdown, I recorded several of the following duets as part of the project for the Knox-Galesburg Symphony. The recordings of the duets were used as part of a special KGS project that provided Holiday music in support of front-line medical workers. Subsequently, some of my students have also enjoyed playing these. These duets are being published so that more hornists may perform them. I hope you find these arrangements interesting and enjoyable! -Randall E. This Berceuse is from a collection of character pieces composed by Amy Beach in 1898: Three Compositions: “La Captive,” “Berceuse,” and “Mazurka.” The Berceuse is a short lullaby in ternary ABA form. This version of the work does not remain at pitch but instead has been lowered by two octaves to allow it to fit comfortably on the horn. Some of the markings have also been adjusted to make sense on horn compared to the original. The Berceuse is part of a series of arrangements meant for a wide group of hornists-from developing players looking for a work for a festival performance -to the professional hornist searching for a lyrical character piece for a recital. This set also includes works by Cui, Grieg, and Humperdinck. Beach's Berceuse is the most difficult of this set of arrangements. These arrangements are of moderate technical difficulty, and are meant to test numerous aspects of horn playing outside of high playing. The Berceuse includes the study of ornamentation, middle register endurance, and the study of the sharp key-D major concert. Grade: 3-4 Learn More -

This collection: Solo Studies for the Healthy Hornist contains ten solos of varying styles. Specifically written for the younger student in mind, the studies in this book will be interesting and challenging to more advanced players as well. When I retired from Western Illinois University in 2018, the focus of my teaching changed. No longer was I working with graduate students-or even undergraduate students who were doing more advanced projects on Wagner Tuba or the Natural Horn; many of my students, then, were in the younger years of high school or junior high school. So, even though I was older, I was spending more time with younger students. So, as I was spending more time teaching these younger students, I became more attuned to their activities in band, dance, and various athletic pursuits. As a result, let me give special thanks to these students who provided inspiration and test runs of these solo studies: Noah, Ernesto, Jack, Elena, Emily, Anabelle, Lorelei, Brooks, and Carter. Their energy and imagination have been an inspiration for these Solo Studies. Learn More -
